From mountains to sea side
Alpine pasture  in mountain areas and seaside boat houses at the fjord - - -

- - -  Is witnesses of times gone by.  Times when all resources had to be utilized.  Whether it was mountain pastures or hay making in the outlying fields at summertime or fire wood, timber or barrel hoops making  for sale or own use in the fall or winter time.

Farms were located from the seaside to half the way up to the mountains, The farms at the highest attitude, also had strips of forest down to the fjord.
Here it was, at winter time, a considerable activity of the farmers making fire wood and barrel hoops.  The products for sale, were transported to Bergen further south on the coast by sail sloops, when the winter was gone.  Trips that could take as long as a fourth night if the wind was no good.

Home on the farm, the women ruled over kids and animals while the men was out on work.

The goods that were made for shipping, was stored at the seaside.  Some of the boat houses was equipped for cooking and overnight stops, so some of the men could be away for days.

One of the most easily accessible alpine pastures in the area is the Soelvberg pasture. (Photos to the left  St. Olav's Day,  29th of July 2003 ).
There is a motor road right into the meadow.  It is no farming as earlier years now,  but cow houses and cabins are kept in good repair.

Larger farms, had their own boat houses at the seaside.  Others could share boat house  together with others.  The church boat was stored in one of the houses.
When it was time to go to the church, (divine services, funerals, weddings, )  people walked down the paths from the farms, put out the boat and rowed across the fjord to the other side of the fjord.  Lovely trip in nice weather, probably not so nice in stormy weather in the winter time.  The boat to the left is one of the old boats used at those times.

Along the path from the fjord, at sheltered spots in the mountainside the farms had orchards,  The climate was too rough further up and winters too strong to grow fruits. as the farms were located at a attitude of 300 - 500 m  above sea level.
Still you can see old apple trees and other remaining of these orchards from the past.

You will find marked paths from the main road to the alpine pastures and the boat houses.
